[edit] Mitre or Scarf Joint:

The mitre or scarf joint is commonly used for joining lengths of mouldings or skirtings to create long runs. It is a simple 45° cut, with the timbers either pinned or just butt jointed.

[edit] Slip Tongue:

The slip Tongue joint is used to lengthen panels, usually particleboard, high density floor board and is even used for timber panelling where the ends will not be seen.
