Description: Caustic soda is also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH). They are white, deliquescent crystals, which absorbs carbon dioxide and water from air, soluble in cold water, alcohol and glycerol. Melts at 318°C. Used as an analytical reagent, chemical intermediate, in rubber reclaiming, petroleum refining and detergents. Excellent as a general cleaner for drains and greasy floors, removes old paint and for making soap.
General cleaning (drains, floors etc): lOOg dissolved in 2L of COLD water in a plastic container makes a very effective cleaning liquid for removal of grease from drainpipes, gully traps and concrete floors. To Remove old paint: 250g dissolved in 1L of COLD water in a plastic container makes a very effective liquid paint stripper. Warning: Caustic Soda causes SEVERE burns and the risk of serious damage to the eyes and skin tissues. If on body or eyes, wash off immediately with copious amounts of water. ALWAYS wear heavy duty rubber gloves and a face shield while handling Caustic Soda. ALWAYS add Caustic Soda to COLD water - NEVER add water to Caustic Soda or pour SOLID Caustic Soda into any confined space such as a drain. Use only COLD water - do NOT use warm or boiling water. Use only the proportions detailed in the directions for use. Never mix Caustic Soda with other chemicals. Ensure all the Caustic Soda is DISSOLVED. Do NOT use aluminium or galvanized utensils with Caustic Soda. Safety Directions: Corrosive; May produce severe burns. Attacks skin and eyes. Wear eye protection when mixing or using. Wear protective gloves when using or mixing. Do not mix with hot water. If in eyes, hold eyelids apart and flush the eye continuously with running water. Continue flushing until advised to stop by the Poisons Information Centre or a doctor or for at least 15 minutes.
